Tech’s home stadium, located on campus, was built with the intention of hosting games, but it has also been used as a staging ground for protests, riots and other violent demonstrations in recent years.
Now, Tech plans to change that.
Tech is partnering with the Virginia Tech Athletics Foundation (VTAF) and the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) to create a new ballpark on campus that will allow fans to watch the Virginia Cavaliers basketball team and the Virginia Institute of Technology’s men’s basketball team play, without disrupting the regular season.
The stadium will be called the Virginia Stadium, and the new ballpark will be named after the former home of Tech, where Tech played for two decades.
The team is currently in a new stadium in New York City, which is also slated to become the home of the Cavaliers.
Tech plans on building a new venue for the Cavaliers, which will also include an additional home for the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Tech also plans to use the facility for academic research, community engagement, and sports programming, according to VTAF and CCE.
The new stadium will serve as the new home of Virginia Tech men’s volleyball, the men and women soccer teams, and Virginia Tech football, according the Tech Athletics Association.
Tech will open the new stadium on June 9 and the Cavaliers will play their home opener on June 12.
Tech and the Commonwealth of Virginia have already been discussing the potential use of the stadium for sports programming for over a decade.
In 2015, Tech launched a “Campus Challenge,” a contest where students would design a new baseball field in the new arena.
Tech’s plan for the new baseball park, which has been named the Virginia Baseball Fields, has been approved by the Virginia State Government.
The project will begin construction in May of 2020 and the team is set to begin its home season in 2021.
“The Virginia Tech basketball team will be back on campus in 2021,” said VTAF President Scott Schoening.
“We are excited to be able to welcome them to our campus and to continue our commitment to provide our students with the best learning experiences possible.
We will continue to build a successful community through the athletic programs at Tech and beyond, and are excited about our potential to be part of the Virginia community moving forward.”
The Cavaliers are the defending national champions and will be playing in their first bowl game since the 2016 season.
VTAF also said that the new park will serve a role in providing opportunities for students to become involved in local and state government, including education, economic development, and environmental stewardship.
“Tech is committed to partnering with organizations like VTAF to provide students and the community with a place to be involved in all facets of the community,” said CCE President and CEO Josh Sink.
“VTAF is a great partner for our efforts to engage our community and the wider world, and we are thrilled to be working with Tech to build an innovative venue that will be a great fit for our students.”
