New York’s booming ultrasound tech industry is poised to make $50 million this year.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday that the industry made $1.5 billion in 2016, and the total earnings were estimated at $5.5 million.
According to the BLS, the median hourly wage for an ultrasound technician is $27.41 an hour, which would average to be $53,000 per year.
That makes the median salary for a U.s. ultrasound technician $40,846, which puts the average ultrasound technician in the $53K per year pay range.
The U-shaped distribution of income is due to the fact that ultrasound techs make more than other workers in the industry.
In the last two years, there has been a shift away from more specialized fields to more specialized occupations.
An ultrasound technician, for example, can make $57,000 if they are making $45,000 to $50K a year.
While the industry is still young, the BLC says that it is projected to grow to $70 billion in 2020, with a predicted 25 percent growth in revenue.
According to an industry website, ultrasound tech salaries range from $31,500 to $57.25 per hour.
